The Unknown Soldier by Aku Louhimies is the story of an infantry unit’s
tour of duty that lasts for more than three years during the Finnish
Continuation War. The film is based on the classic novel by Väinö Linna.
The film is the story of Rokka, Kariluoto, Koskela, Hietanen, and their
brothers-in-arms. It shows how friendship, humour, and the will to live
unite these men on their way there and back. The war changes the lives
of each of the soldiers as well as the lives of those on the home front,
and also leaves its mark on the entire nation.

Never Before
I searched for quite some time for this movie. I viewed "The Winter War" Mini Series and was most impressed. It was with English subtitles. It was also
...
difficult to find. Watched "The Unknown Soldier" without subtitles for perhaps well over an hour's time in segments. Had just about given up hope of ever seeing this with subtitles in English when I found a link on a segment of the film. I have never before been so impressed by any war film by ANY country. "Saving Private Ryan" is perhaps the most realistic war film according to the critics here in the United States. "The Unknown Soldier" surpasses that film in my opinion. The portrayal of the effect of the war on both the soldiers and their families was outstanding. I would like to see the film with better translation. Some of the English words are a bit too contemporary with respect to the profanity. If I could understand the Finnish language I might have to increase my rating to seven stars. I have to give my rating at this time as five stars as there is no listing for six. It is unfortunate that this film is so difficult to view in this country. Perhaps someone will remedy that situation.
